Bodies & Landscapes
Workshops related to Wondering Horizons’ project
Wondering Horizons workshops are an essential extension of the project's artistic and philosophical exploration. We seek to generate encounters that connect us with the dance community in the lands we traverse.
Bodies and Landscapes workshop is an invitation to experience and reinterpret key concepts from our current work, Wondering Horizons / An artistic pilgrimage, by moving beyond rational consciousness through intuition. Jakob Jautz's ongoing concept of landscape-based choreography and the intrinsic relationship between dance and walking form the basis of the workshop.
Landscape-based choreography is a working method that uses the body and movement to explore the relationship between people and their physical world. Specific exercises will allow us to perceive the influence that landscapes, their inhabitants (human and non-human), and the local climate have on us and incorporate this into our movements. We will approach this topic in a tangible and concrete way, while also exploring more abstract and metaphysical perspectives. We will explore how memories of landscapes can be embodied; we examine how a landscape informs our choreographic decisions and becomes our co-creator, thereby recognising the right of landscapes to have a say.
Walking and dancing – two actions that share fundamental principles such as weight, time and space. Walking is a captivating and harmonious oscillation of muscle contraction and relaxation that allows us to explore the world and even “create” space with every step. In the workshop, we build dance on this foundation, expanding everyday movement into a sophisticated form of expression through controlled weight shifting, spatial awareness and rhythmic intention.
Through our artistic perspective, technical, improvisational and partnering tools, we aim to sharpen our sensitivity and discover new ways of inhabiting and perceiving the world in which we are a part—together.
